The Importance of Remembrance

With everything going on in the world right now, even right here in our country, where freedom and equality are supposed to be woven into our flag itself, I am scared. Scared that we forget to easily. Scared that maybe we never even knew. And most importantly, scared that some people are too happy to forget.

My job right now lets me work in a fantasy world, where magic reigns supreme and the problems of reality should be far away. But my brain cannot stop thinking endlessly about how horrible our reality is quickly becoming. While I am no longer teaching in a classroom, I realized that maybe I can still teach- or if nothing else, maybe I can still express myself in a way that has the potential to educate, even if I have no readers- because ultimately I feel trapped. Stuck inside my head, thoughts whirring wildly with vivid images of the past that quickly becomes our present. The darkness that looms from our past is quickly encroaching on our every day, seemingly mundane lives. And if we don’t look for the light, shine it bright, hold people accountable, fight back against the oppression and injustices we swore to never repeat again with all our might, I fear we are lost.

When I don’t know what else to do, I ruminate on ideas in my head for hours upon hours. They build up intricate walls, filled with ornate, beautiful, and horrific images that others will never see. But the wonder of education is that showcasing some of these intricacies becomes possible. Of course, this is only the case when people truly want to learn something.

So, this is my plea that somewhere, someone wants to learn, and that the knowledge imparted from these posts will inspire someone to be better informed, and, ideally, better prepared to challenge the bigoted, white supremacist, neo-Nazis (are they even neo at this point, or just Nazis?) that spread hate, fear, and violence to other people.

TLDR; I’m going to start writing a blog about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Too many people don’t know the stories of this part of our past, and therefore, cannot see how scarily reminiscent the world is becoming to that chapter of humanity.

Never forget. Remembrance starts with you.
